Ingredients
- 1 medium onion thinly sliced
- 1 pound (450g) thinly sliced beef usually, you can find "sukiyaki" or "shabu-shabu" beef in Asian markets
- 2 tbsp mirin sweet rice wine
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- pinch salt
- 1 cup dashi stock you can use instant dashi granules and follow the package instructions) or substitute with beef stock
- 1 tbsp cooking oil
- 2 cups cooked short-grain white rice
- Optional toppings sliced green onions, pickled ginger, and onsen egg / egg yolk
Instructions
- Heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil in a large pan over medium heat.
- Add the thinly sliced onions and cook for about 5 minutes or until they soften and start to caramelize.
- Stir in the mirin, sugar, soy sauce, oyster sauce, dashi stock and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil.
- Add the thinly sliced beef to the pan and cook until it changes color and is no longer pink. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Simmer the mixture for a few more minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Serve the Gyudon over a bowl of cooked rice.
- Garnish with sliced green onions, pickled red ginger, and an onsen egg if desired.
