Nepalese Pork Momos

Growing up, I used to eat these all the time at my best friend Pratiksha’s house. Her mom would make the most amazing momos ever! So trust me when I say, these are oh-so-delicious! Momos are a type of South Asian dumpling. The ingredients are very similar to any other Chinese dumpling, however it is infused with Indian spices and herbs. This recipe is the perfect blend of spice and savouriness. If you are a dumpling fan already… you will for sure love these! Yes, they do require a little bit of labour, but trust me, the end result is amazing! An idea is to have a momo party where you have momo labourers come and help you out in exchange for a meal ;). Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 pounds of minced meat (either all pork, or pork and beef)
  • 1/2 cup of minced white onion
  • 1/4 cup of minced green onion
  • 1/2 cup of diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup of minced cilantro
  • 1 tbsp of minced ginger
  • 1 tbsp of minced garlic
  • 1 tbsp of soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp of sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp of salt
  • 1 tbsp of curry powder (or momo masala)
  • 1/2 tsp of nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp of tumeric
  • 2 red chillies diced (or to taste)
  • 1 tsp of pepper
  • 2 packages of ROUND dumpling/ wonton wrappers

DIRECTIONS

  1. Mix together all the ingredients using a big mixing bowl. Cover and marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Using either homemade or store bought dumpling wrappers, carefully take one wrapper and add 1 tbsp of your marinated meat ensuring that it is placed in the middle of your dumpling wrapper. Then, carefully dip your finger in a bowl of water, and spread it on the edge of one half of your dumpling wrapper. Carefully fold together the two sides of the momo and pinch together.
  3. Set aside your momos on a non-stick mat (so that they don’t stick together). Adding more flour to them will help if they do stick. Any momos you don’t want to steam yet, you can freeze for up to 3 weeks!
  4. Heat up your shallow pan with 5 cups of water and place your steamer basket inside (don’t forget to oil this basket!). Place your momos on this basket.
  5. Cover & steam your dumplings for 17-20 minutes until the wrapper is translucent.
  6. Serve with some momo chutney!
  7. Enjoy!
